Video Lessons of the Day:
Learn about TRANSITIONS!!
Listen, ok,
Way before games were what we all played,
You could find me on a Rampage in the arcade.
First, it started with Pong,
A table-tennis game but it wasn't too strong.
For instance, it was only black and white.
Nonetheless, kids would play it every night.
Next came Space Invaders,
Where you shoot aliens with little lasers.

Kids wanted to play. Consequently,
Machines appeared all over the place,
Indeed Atari fulfilled lots of orders,
And made 2 billion dollars in quarters.
Meanwhile, you have to know,
Pac-Man was the captain at eating ghosts.
And then the 80's craze,
The industry experienced a golden age.

PCs and home consoles came,
You didn't need to drop quarters to play games.
Equally important, games were sick,
Legend of Zelda in '86.
Simultaneously, Super Mario Bros,
On Nintendo came in to a lot of our homes.
Immediately, it became a hit,
You ran through mushrooms to get big.

Beyond sales, there's a story,
These games had our imaginations soaring.
Of course, we were just in a chair,
But on the screens, we'd fly through the air.
We had a need for speed - honest,
So we rolled with a hedgehog we called Sonic.
Then the 90s, games were ill,
Such as SimCity, where we learned to build.

Similarly, the game that sold the most,
On the PC was The Sims, so you know.
3D chips had us Quaking and Doomed,
First person shooters came with a boom.
Despite the appeal to the youth, um,
Some saw the violence as too gruesome.
Accordingly, ratings were introduced,
To make all these games easier to choose.

Playstation had hits like MLB,
Specifically Final Fantasy.
Truly Xbox CDs had graphics,
And the cartridges couldn't catch it.
Moreover, CDs were cheaper to make,
On the other hand, CDs were cheaper to take,
Cheaper to copy and to steal,
But in 2006 that's when things got real.

Wii finally made games appeal,
To the whole family, and they played for real.
And on mobile phones, we can all be nerds,
When we shoot down pigs with our Angry Birds.
In sum, in summary, to sum up, too,
On the whole, in the end, to conclude
,
The transition from Pong to today,
Has given us amazing games along the way.

Reading Passage of the Day!

Make sure to put all your answers in complete sentences in your notebook!

What do you do with your orange peels and corn cobs after you are done eating? Most people throw them in the trash can. But food leftovers do not have to go into the trash. They are biodegradable, which means that they can be broken down by bacteria into natural materials. People who like to garden often put their fruit and vegetable scraps in a special place known as a compost pile.

A compost pile is a spot outdoors where food waste can break down into compost, which gardeners use. This process takes several months. Once the compost is created, people spread this mixture in their gardens to add nutrients to the soil. The compost in the soil helps new plants grow in the garden.

How do you take care of a compost pile? It needs air, water, and heat. Bacteria and other microorganisms break down the food waste into more basic elements like water and carbon dioxide. This process requires oxygen, so people use a shovel to turn compost regularly and help air reach all parts of the pile. The pile cannot dry out, so it should be covered to keep moisture in. Finally, heat speeds up the process. This means a compost pile should be in the sun for at least part of the day.

Food leftovers are not the only things that turn into compost. You can also add yard waste like grass clippings, dried leaves, and straw. In fact, you should add these things to create a healthy balance in your compost. But do not add any weeds to your compost pile unless you want to grow weeds in your garden! Sometimes seeds are left behind in the compost. This can be a welcome surprise if you find a tomato plant sprouting where you had not planted one. The tomato seed was hiding in the compost, waiting to begin a new life in the garden.

1) Gardeners use compost to
A. reduce the amount of trash on the planet
 B. break down food waste
 C. add nutrients to the soil
 D. take care of bacteria and other microorganisms

2) To take care of a compost pile you have to
 I. turn it regularly
 II. cover it
III. make sure it is in the sun for at least part of the day
A. I only
 B. I and II only
 C. II and III only
 D. I, II, and III

3) People should start a compost pile if they
 A. need compost right away
 B. do not like to garden
 C. want to put their food waste to good use
 D. eat oranges and corn

4) You should not put weeds in a compost pile because
 A. they do not create a healthy balance
 B. food leftovers are the only things that turn into compost
 C. you do not want surprise plants growing in your garden
 D. the seeds can create new weeds in your garden

5) As used in the final paragraph, sprouting most nearly means
 A. blooming
 B. growing
 C. appearing
 D. hiding

6) The author apparently believes that a tomato plant
 A. is not a weed
 B. should not go in a compost pile
 C. is the best thing a gardener can grow
 D. requires compost to grow

7) What main genre is the is the passage?
a) fiction
b) nonfiction

Leonardo da Vinci
Occupation: Artist, Inventor, Scientist
  • Born: April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy
  • Died: May 2, 1519 in Amboise, Kingdom of France
  • Famous works: Mona Lisa, The Last Supper, The Vitruvian Man
  • Style/Period: High Renaissance
Biography:Leonardo da Vinci was an artist, scientist, and inventor during the Italian Renaissance. He is considered by many to be one of the most talented and intelligent people of all time. The term Renaissance Man (someone who does many things very well) was coined from Leonardo's many talents and is today used to describe people who resemble da Vinci.

Where was Leonardo da Vinci born?
Leonardo was born in the town of Vinci, Italy on April 15, 1452. Not much is known about his childhood other than his father was wealthy and had a number of wives. About the age of 14 he became an apprentice to a famous artist named Verrocchio. This is where he learned about art, drawing, painting and more.

Leonardo the Artist
Leonardo da Vinci is regarded as one of the greatest artists in history. Leonardo excelled in many areas including drawing, painting, and sculpture. Although we don't have a lot of his paintings today, he is probably most famous for his paintings and also gained great fame during his own time due to his paintings. Two of his most famous paintings, and perhaps two of the most famous in the world, include the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper.

Leonardo's drawings are also quite extraordinary. He would keep journals full of drawings and sketches, often of different subjects that he was studying. Some of his drawings were previews to later paintings, some were studies of anatomy, some were closer to scientific sketches. One famous drawing is the Vitruvian Man drawing. It is a picture of man who has perfect proportions based off the notes from the Roman architect Vitruvius. Other famous drawings include a design for a flying machine and a self portrait.

Leonardo the Inventor and Scientist
Many of da Vinci's drawings and journals were made in his pursuit of scientific knowledge and inventions. His journals were filled with over 13,000 pages of his observations of the world. He drew pictures and designs of hang gliders, helicopters, war machines, musical instruments, various pumps, and more. He was interested in civil engineering projects and designed a single span bridge, a way to divert the Arno River, and moveable barricades which would help protect a city in the case of attack.

Many of his drawings were on the subject of anatomy. He studied the human body including many drawings on muscles, tendons, and the human skeleton. He had detailed figures of various parts of the body including the heart, arms, and other internal organs. Leonardo didn't just study the human anatomy either. He also had a strong interest in horses as well as cows, frogs, monkeys, and other animals.

Fun Facts about Leonardo da Vinci
The term Renaissance Man means someone who is good at everything. Leonardo is considered to be the ultimate Renaissance man.
  • Some people claim he invented the bicycle.
  • He was very logical and used a process like the scientific method when investigating a subject.
  • His Vitruvian man is on the Italian Euro coin.
  • Only around 15 of his paintings are still around.
  • The Mona Lisa is also called "La Giaconda" meaning the laughing one.
  • Unlike some artists, Leonardo was very famous for his paintings while he was still alive. It's only recently that we've realized what a great scientist and inventor he was.
