WHEN:  Monday, November 25, 2013 @ STEM  at  3:00 PM to 3:55 PM

WHAT:  Auditions for the 2013-2014 Odyssey of the Mind team.

BACKGROUND:
Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.

SELECTION PROCESS:
One team consist of 7 individuals.  Grades 3 thru 5 compete in Division 1, and grades 6-8 compete Division 2.  As of now, there is only coach which means there will only be 7 slots available.  If additional coaches should want to give their time to take on a team, additional slots will be made available.  Students must complete the application process and prerequisites to be considered for a spot on the team.  Note, a team is selected based on how a group of 7 will be able to work together and compliment one another’s talents.

Spontaneous Practice

Spider’s WebA.  When the team enters the room, tell them this is a verbal problem

  1. Judge Reads to Teams:
  1. You will have 1 minute to think and 3 minutes to respond. You may ask questions during your think time: however, time continues. No other talking is allowed.
  2. You will receive 1 point for each common respons. Highly creative or humorous
responses will receive 5 points. This will be the subjective opinion of the judges and the judges decision is final.

Your team is to take turns in sequence. You may not skip your turn, or repeat, or pass. If one member of the team is stuck, the team is stuck. Once time begins, it will not be stopped. If the judge asks you to repeat a response, or to clarify it, or to give a more appropriate response, it counts against your time. Speak loudly and clearly.

Your problem is to imagine that you are a fly trapped in a spider’s web. What would you do or what would you say? For example, you might say "I hope the spider has already had lunch!" (Repeat Number 5)

JUDGE READS TO TEAMS:

This is a verbal problem. Your team has one minute to decide which team members will participate.
(JUDGES GIVE TEAM MEMBERS ONE MINUTE TO DECIDE)
You will have one minute to think and 3 minutes to respond. You may ask questions; however, time will continue. You may not talk to each other at any time.

You will receive 1 point for each common response. Creative or humorous responses will receive 3 points each. Highly creative or humorous responses will receive 5 points. This will be a subjective opinion of the judges and the judges' decision is final.

You may not skip your turn, repeat a response, or pass. If one member of the team is stuck, the team is stuck.

Once time begins it will not be stopped. If the judge asks you to repeat a response, or to clarify it, or to give a more appropriate response, time will continue. Speak loudly and clearly.

Your problem is: Many businesses invent creative names for their companies. You are to give the name of a store or company and tell what that store or company might sell. For example, you could say "OMER’S Place" sells creativity." (Repeat "Your problem is …)

You may begin.

JUDGES ONLY:
Be sure to give each team one minute to think and 3 minutes to respond. They may not talk during their thinking time, except to ask the judge questions.
